Laundry Odd and Even ,Blues and Ariel

We've all got the blues. It's too hot to play outdoors , there's a water shortage so the swimming pool is temporarily closed, school off for the vacations and there's absolutely nothing more to do than play video games and read comics.
Yes.
That's the routine these poor overwhelmed, overworked teenagers follow.
And then we hear stuff about stress and peer group pressure.
We've just returned from Delhi after a short vacation with the parents. So sweet child was all spoilt and pampered, however enjoying every moment with the grandparents. And my mother has always ensured that children never have any free time...he was assigned the job of operating appliances.
Dishwasher, Washing  machine and the likes.

This was deemed to be an Odd even activity with for members of a family. Well ,the mother, me ,I am the  female here.
I don't believe in doing much of the work anymore. I'm like a senior bureaucrat here at home. I give directions and expect the chores to be completed.
So the package of Ariel detergent had to be put to good use.
So all the cushion covers were  removed and bedcovers were taken off and the bucket was to be emptied into the washing machine.
So the boys video games were interrupted and they were put to some work.
Sweet Child's male chauvinism has been nipped in the bud a long time ago. But he was reluctant to go all the dirty work.
So he roped in his friend.
The even tempered person was wielding the camera and the odd men were sorting the dirty clothes.
That one carton of Ariel was tossed around  bit and once the playing had ended they did manage to get the clothes in the buckets to be loaded into the machine.

Supreme heat waves were taken as the reason the chores would be done indoors in air conditioning.

There was quite alot of clowning around that went into that one chore... but the cushions were straightened with zippers closed and buttons done up.
And because the boys were having so much fun, sweet dog Romeo also decided to join them.
In retrospect and in GIF ,even washing clothes is fun.
A word of advice here, these bed covers and cushion covers are all made of cotton and are safely dumped into any washing machine witha safe detergent like Ariel.

You can be sure that the boys shenanigans will not lead to their white Tshirts becoming pink and blue or Tie Dyed.
I wish mothers al made their boys do the chores they make thier daughters do.
After all the boys may need to manage all their work alone. And when they have a detergent like Ariel, you can rest easy that your child will be wearing clean clothes, even when you aren't around to supervise their Laundry.
And when they have families, its only fair that they help out their partners in all the house work
After all,you do need clean clothes.
So why should you expect the lady of the house to be lifting the dirty Laundry to load the washing machine.
Its not that difficult ,is it?

So all motbera should be like me. Even though we are fortunate  enough to have hired help...the boys and girls must be able to do their own Laundry.
We had a great time washing clothes. The boys washed...er loaded and like a maestro conducting an orchestra, all tunes played well and the job was done.

Quite a slave driver I am, aren't I? But thats how youve got to teach them. A teacher has to be a task master.
And I do so enjoy myself.

Book Review- Second Spring by Sandhya Jane

Book Review
ISBN :978-0-9906-3740-0 (India Book House)
Genre : Romance
Pages :288
Published by India Book House

I joined the #BrunchBookChallenge at the beginning of the year 2016 , if only to keep track of the books I read.
Looking back on the years gone by, the genres of my choice have been so predictable- blood, murder, crime ,conspiracy theories, historical crimes and all that blah.
Oh and I love romance too. Mills and Boon romances have always been the lifter of my sagging spirits. They reiterate my optimism and belief in the indomitable female spirit.
So when hubby dear went to check out the new library in his office, he picked up an intense Crime fiction written by James Rollins for me,knowing for sure I would read it.
My heart was warmed plenty by the gesture, but I could only ask myself,"Am I that predictable?"
That doesn't bode too well for the woman in me.
So I need to dither from the path oft traveled.
So I saw Blogadda offering copies of a romantic story written by an Indian author, I so needed to click on the link.

Absolutely no crime, not even a slap. No, Not a passionate "I couldn't help myself but have sex with him" kind of a story either.
And it's not yet a soon to be a motion picture story either. I know it's not good news financially for the writer, but it's an unadulterated story.
I'm not going to put in spoilers ,only that the ending is happy.

I started the book with few expectations .
And wasn't too thrilled with the book being written in first person almost as a diary entry.
Two versions, one the female perspective and the other the male protagonists side.
The characters well thought out.
The lady ,very strong, independent, individualistic and focused.
The man, ambitious, rooted ,aware of his shortcomings and not conniving. He is portrayed to have very strong family ties.
That Mes Amis, is rare to see nowadays.
Youngsters are generally portrayed to be opportunistic and ruthless. Especially when they see an older woman in play.
Well, he seems like a boy with a good value system.
I hope my son turns out like that too.

As the pages turned quickly by,the narrative grew on me. Circumstances portrayed are exceptionally really life like. It doesn't feel far fetched  at all.
While reading this book , Nida Fazli's couplet rang well in my mind...

Kabhi  kissi ko mukkamal jahan nahi milta,
Kahin zameen to Kahin aasaman nahin milta...

(Nobody ever gets it all in life. There'll always be just one thing missing...)

A successful young professional, with an adorable son and a wonderfully supportive family doesn't have a man in her life. And then he enters , And wrecks havoc.
Then he leaves and takes away all that she has painstakingly built.
She tries to build it up once again, but makes sacrifices on the professional front and then it all works out in the end.

That's the most of the story.
Sandhya Jane has taken an unorthodox approach to the love story, keeping the love alive . The plot and interesting people she weaves into the story keep the pages turning.
And as a good love story should end...
All is well that ends well.

Suffice to say, I will be recommending this book to many. Not because of the love story type angle. But because the words made me all fuzzy and warm and happy inside.

It's rare ,you see a book like so,from an Indian author.
So kudos to you,Sandhya Jane.
May you write many more such warm fuzzy stories.

Be sure to send them to me to review .

The Best seller She Wrote -Book Review

A Book review.

I have been living on a diet of thrillers and murder mysteries for the past month or so. Ruth Rendall and Patricia Cornwell have been keeping my spectacles company, thanks to my friendly neighbourhood librarian. Dr Scarpetta seems to be walking in the ridges of my grey matter.
More words to wander in.

"The BestSeller She Wrote" arrived in the mail a few days back.
So I set my part mouldy, part dog eared books aside to make room for an Indian author. Full attention to Mr Ravi Subramanian.
After all Mr Modi insists that we must Make in India.

First impressions are hard to shake.
So I'll put those down first.
Yellow.
Ugh.
Not a very reader friendly colour.
"Soon to be a motion picture."
Obviously, next we'll hear of the author being embroiled in a brouhaha about movie rights and script rights etc. Been there, seen that.
What was the big idea of releasing a book if it must be made into a script?
Fame? Money? Vanity?
Ravi Subramanian revealed some secrets of the publishing industry in this book. So all he budding authors, read this book.

Next on, the guy on the cover. You can't pass a 25 something to be 40 years old.
This is not a Mills and Boon Romance.
It took me a day to get over the cover.
Time was ticking, I had to review the book in 7 days and also be part of two events.
Sleep deprivation and reading in the washroom was so not worth it.

I don't want to be the toxic bitch here, but I'll try to put in some nice words.
The books revolves around a successful author-full time banker, part time family man, part time author, almost Chetan Bhagat like in stature- only this one is supposed to be handsome.

How he manages to write his books and work in a bank that needs all your attention seems to be akin to Hawkeye from The Avengers.
Superhuman.
Someone give me that power.
Or maybe a couple of pairs of invisible arms.
So much to do and so less time.

Happy family, wife Maya, is the contented IIM lady involved in social work ,working for guess who? Neeta Ambani.
Young Child ,Aryan, who never finds a mention, except for his name.
Banker and author Aditya Kapoor is a superbly charming guy who is VAIN, Selfie conscious and all that.
He has the bestest friend a man can have ,Sanjay ,who always has his back.
And who is a voracious reader.
Chance encounter with a young lady Shreya, who is arrogant and rude but converts to his bestest fan overnight when she reads his books.
So ,she joins his bank ,Hindi movie style and then hooks her talons into his helpless (sic) skin.
And Aditya falls hook ,line and sinker.
And then there is seduction ,of the style of the 70's Hindi movies. When two flowers were shown coming together because the censor board did not permit it.
We have a reference to eroticism and Aditya's inability to express a sexual encounter. And EL James is even there.
So where's the sex?
Oh yes, we're Indian, we just do sex in erotic bestsellers.

And then the author weaves a sordid tale where he justifies attraction and betrayal .
Then Aditya's wife falls ill. And he realises his mistake and tries to get away from the leech.
But she has other things on her mind.
She needs to ensure blackmailing him to get her book published.
And the book gets published. Before time .
And then becomes a bestseller because of all the sordid interest created by the gutter press.
And the Aditya Kapoor redeems himself by offering the truth to the whole world and ends up painting Shreya with muck.
Intentional?
She was bad, but the entire million odd words had nothing good about Aditya Kapoor. He finally realises that Cheating on his spouse is like throwing away a diamond and picking up fool's gold. So he was greedy. I knew it.

So well, I don't want this post to be a spoiler, because the end is the best part of the book.
Aditya Kapoor acknowledges that cheating is not a mistake,it's a choice.

But the blatant violation his marriage vows and continuation of the affair was what put me off. That and repeated references to authors like Amish , Chetan Bhagat and Ravi Subramanium himself was another cheesy bit.
The friend was not really a friend,if she went along with that neurotic ,obsessive, possessive tendencies that Shreya possesses.

The end reinstates that what goes around, comes around.
And that by vitiating someone's reputation and family life , it's not going to spell something good for you either.
But as a woman, I need to know...
Why did Aditya walk away and Shreya take the brunt of the ill will?

You'll need to read this to know the way out.
My verdict.
I'm all about Love ,sex and dhoka.
And blood and murders and complicated relationships.
And loneliness.
And bad childhood memories.
And good books.
If I had to buy this book to read it.... I wouldn't have been really happy.

I'll give this book 2 stars out of 5.

Of Sordid Smelly Tails and Tales

Someone up there made sure that the four legged creatures should refrain from being smell less. The smell is what identifies them to be four legged creatures.
"Maim saheb thoda dettol ,thoda phenyl ,thoda mitti ka tel dalne ka na pocha main, baarish ka baas aata hai" ,advises Madam the maid ,in her cute sing song Marathi accent.
Essentially telling me that I need to add disinfectants to the water when the floor is being mopped coz my home stinks- politely that is.
For all ye new to my blog.
This is what my home looks like...give or take a few things...

This is the first time in my married life that me and my boys read also one dog are confined to an apartment. This is also my first monsoon in Mumbai.
The boys have always had the freedom to remove stinky shoes, socks and sundry stinky stuff in the veranda to mercy fully leave my house smelling fresh and inviting.
He loves the balcony now.
However, now in Mumbai , even sweet dog chooses to shake himself dry in my sitting room.
Google -photographing a wet dog has to be the most difficult.
So my cushion covers and curtains and curios are dotted with bacteria feeding on his body oil and farting to emit that wet dog smell.
Put this way ,it seems gross. So most of my curios are packed up as we don't like the extra dusting to be done in such circumstances.
So since we live with the farting bacteria emitting the wet dog smells , we tend to ignore the curios. The Lesser the surface area smelling bad,the better.
Could such a cute thing smell so bad?Ask the maid.
Add to that the smell of the washed clothes and sundy laundry drying under fans ,because the sun is on a sabbatical.I havent felt any sunshine for the last one week.
Add to that some 15 -20 cigarettes daily that are supposedly smoked near the windows or in the balcony, and two different brands of Deodorants and after shaves-boys here remember...
Add to that the stinky smell of the gym wear and shoes and wet umbrellas that are stacked near the door.
Add to that the supposed aromas of heeng tadka daals ,and chicken and sometimes pakoras.
No wonder ,sweet dog likes to eat his food in the balcony. All these smells interfere with the aroma of his chicken rice.
No wonder the crows stand on the balcony balustrade and caw ,admonishing me on my lack of house keeping skills ...and maybe gossiping about me too. How can you trust these black beady eyed monsters. No wonder they look as though they mock me.
My vanilla essence just isn't as effective anymore. Baking bread aromas get drowned before they reach the bedrooms.
All my scented candles and Dhoop Battis and Pot Pourri with essential oils have been wasted.
That is why my maid smells the farting bacteria that makes my house smell like a giant wet dog. And to think sweet dog is a small Lhasa Apso!
I have tried the baking soda and vinegar mixture to wipe him dry ,but that only gave him a skin infections and the medications obviously smell worse.
That's why Madam my maid tries to put down the wet dog smell to a simple baarish ka Baas. The foul smell of the rain!
All my efforts have been in vain.
I rue the day we got stationed to a place where bungalows are few and far between.
No flowers ,no lemon grass...
Our social life has come to a near stand still, considering we can't invite people over who wont be acclimatised to, or understand the farting bacteria as us.
The maid finally had a suggestion.
She works in another house that is also infested with farting bacteria and two dogs. Big dogs at that.
"Wo madam bolti ,safed batli se espray karne ka-barobar sheee shee karne ka... to baarish ka baas jayenga."
So with suggestions from the other lady I must spray a room freshner to get rid of these fumes. I went looking for the safed batli (white bottle)with espray(aerosol spray) and look what i found...
Paradise.

The smell of lavender and other pleasant flowers rules over the farting bacteria and wet clothes smell.

Ambi-pur Air Effects to the rescue ,everytime now.
No more Baarish Ka Baas. from #SmellyToSmiley.
So Monsoon or no,my home will always smell of smiles.
After a few sprays, I can rest assured that my maid and guests will never smell anything unpleasant here again. Just enjoy the hospitality of a happy ,odor free home. And there will be no more mention of any gas being emitted from any living creature. Ever.

PS :it is a scientifically proven fact that bacteria break down the organic acids in wet dog fur to produce smells akin to dead and decaying organic matter.

Of Energy and Music

You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like its heaven on earth.
                      William Purkey

"Stop pumping your arms like that moti...you are looking silly."
Lakshita chose to ignore her boyfriend who was supposed to be training her in the gym. He had told her that he would be her driving force. Lakshita cranked up the volume of her mp3 player ,feigning ignorance , but Kavin stepped off his treadmill to stop hers .
She hated being forcibly stopped. She turned to look at the only guy who had wanted to be her boyfriend in the two years she had been in college. All the girls in her class were in a relationship and she did not want to be a pariah.
For the first time in her life she had been motivated to lose weight...
"What Kavin? Why did you stop me like this ? I could've got hurt."
"Moti ,you have so many layers of fat around your tummy , that will cushion any injury. " He smirked.
"Don't move your arms like that . You are looking funny . Its embarrassing, everyone is watching you . walk properly on the treadmill. "
Lakshita felt tears sting her eyes. Kavin always made fun of her. She wondered if this rudeness was worth being part of the pack.
She got off the treadmill and walked towards the exit.
"Don't eat too much after the exercise Moti. See you tomorrow. " Kavin called after her and went back to pumping  his weights.

Lakshita signed out of the gym and walked out angry . She was beginning to enjoy the routine and had also lost a few inches. The weighing scale had just begun to show lower numbers.
But she swore ,she would never work out with him again.
She went home feeling disgusted with her self. She was about to attack the bread box and have her comfort food of toast and butter when her next door neighbor called out to her from the kitchen window.
"Lakshita have you joined a gym? You're loosing weight. Good..,I was telling my cousin how focused you are ,you are so inspiring na....even I want to try. " Lakshita smiled at Diva and said to her "Sure."
She left the bread box as it was and went to her room to turn on the tv. MTV always had good music. She decided to carry on her workouts at home now. The college was closing for the Autumn break anyway.  She just started dancing to the beats of the music playing. And found that her feet moved naturally.  She googled dance steps and found many dance routines on you tube.
And then what. ..loud ,pulsating music and blood pumping dance. That was what she was doing.
The scales began tipping in her favour and she began avoiding Kavin like the plague. It was easy ,he had always felt as though he was doing her a favor anyways. Try outs for tje college festival had begun , and she was selected for the college dance team... her joy knew no bounds.
And suddenly, Kavin was being nice to her. But she realized that she didn't need any boy to make her feel accepted.
On the day of the festival, when the troupe was getting ready in the green room ,she heard that Anushka Manchanda and Allu Arjun would be performing after their event. Thanks to her south Indian roots she knew what a rocking dancer Allu Arjun was.
After their extremely applauded dance performance they vacated the stage for Anushka Manchanda and Allu Arjun.  And then the magic began .Anushka belted outhigh energy numbers and Allu Arjun never missed a beat. She was watching from the first row when he held out his hand to invite her to dance. She was frozen and her friends pushed her onto the stage. Once on , she matched him step for each step and he was grinning. ... you are a fantastic dancer. And then he kissed her....
The was so energized, she could fly.Together they had made her so special.
Anushka came forward to congratulate Lakshita on a beautiful fresh performance.

Lakshita now realized that you don't need anyone to complete you. Just your belief in yourself.

My Money Book- An Organiser Par Excellence

I like receiving gifts, even they come in the form of little handy hardbound dairies.
My Money Book is just that.
A handy dandy little dairy that has all the space for you to duly note down, systematically, all the investment s you and your family have made and a proper place to note down all relevant information.
Hubby dear and sweet dad are extremely systematic.  One trusts the Internet, whereas the other has a deep mistrust for storing important information online.
No its the other way round.
Sweet dad ,is the one who has full faith in Google and all websites.  But ,just to be safe ,all his important documents et al are printed out and filed in folders ,in a sequence that only he can comprehend.
Hubby dear on the other hand ,commits a lot to memory, his note pad and printouts.
He has this mnemonic for remembering when insurance policies are to be paid up and when bills are to be paid etc.
Unfortunately for most of the adult population, memories cannot really sustain all relevant dates(yeah ,thats why birthdays are forgotten?) and invariably dates will slip.
God forbid, if one forgot insurance premiums dates and an accident occurs...
That will be a heavy price to pay to be unorganized.
So for those lost souls ,this little Red Book My Money Book can prove to be a blessing.
It looks like a regular diary.
But is a gold mine of information which could be your life life.

1. Hard Bound-hence long life
This little red treasure is hard bound and quite slim. So your financial details could be stored in a slim water proof folder in a safe place. You wont have to worry about any loose sheets or covers tearing.  So My Money Book will probably last you longer than most of your insurance policies.

2. Organized Data /Info Entry
There are four sections in this book.
    a. My Insurance Policies- covering life ,health ,motor and property insurance with columns to fill in details about the company ,policy date ,premium due date ,sum assured etc. There are three pages to note details for Motor insurance too. So if you are like me, you will invariably forget to pay the smaller cars insurance-My Money book will be a handy reminder.
b.My Bank Details - wherein one can note all details of account numbers, IFSC codes ,credit card details and locker numbers etc. One can also note the items stored in the bank lockers too.
   c. My loans- You can note all loan details to help you keep your finances in check.

d.My Investments-Proper columns to note mutual fund folio numbers, scheme names SIP tenures and what have you , so you font have to depend on information linked to your pan card online. For me ,this is the best part of the book. I had lost my folio numbers of certain mutual funds I had invested in and had a harrowing time getting printouts from the consultants.

3. Payment logs
You can keep track of payments made and premiums due dates ,thanks to the simplicity of the column headings.  Guaranteed to never let you down ,so you can note down the date the payment was made , vide which instrument etc.

4. No fear of hackers/Hard Discs getting corrupted or Crashing.
Pen and paper are always a good idea. You'll know that they are always safe. Hard drives can crash and take all your financial details with them or hackers could use the information to steal from you. So My Money Book is a safe way to store financial details.

5. Simple and easy to use
My Money Book is so simple that any family member may be able use it maybe in your absence. They wont have to go through your documents and make financial faux pas like noting incorrect back account numbers or wrong policy details (yes ,I have done that - don't blame me ,blame the fine print on the documents). Really helpful.  All you need is to fill the details from the original documents and you are good to go.

My only suggestion is that My Money Book should come in a waterproof folder with a few pockets for just a few documents.
Just so that in the time lag between making payments and entering details ,the receipts are not lost.
Why waterproof, so that in the event of a flood or a leakage or simply a coffee spillage the details stay safe.

Overall, I am impressed.  I am giving my copy to Hubby dear and am going to manage one more for my dad so they they can keep their records planned and safe.

Full marks to Exide life insurance, for bringing this handy dandy My Money Book.

Remember My Words, My Son

Top post on IndiBlogger.in, the community of Indian Bloggers
Sweet Child ,
You are the blood of my soul, so you are the dearest. I may fret, I may fume but,my all my anger ,disappointment or disgust just disappears the second you reach out to hug me. You stand at the  threshold of this crazy world. Balancing on a fine thread.
Today, when you handed me that Mother's day card to store for posterity,I felt that I must give you something in return.
That may not be a party favor, but hopefully something concrete enough for you to build you life on and keep you grounded.
Something like the rock St Peter built Jesus' church on.
I know ,we are not an overtly religious family. But we are God fearing. And we believe that good comes around. So ,never forget these few words that I have penned here.
I keep saying these to you,but the written word has a deeper impact,no?

I believe its always easier to tell the truth.
Always.
That's what I have been doing...its easier on the grey cells. The greatest advantage of speaking the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said. Imagine having to to take notes to keep tabs on all the fibs that you have told. It will be murderously crazy , having to refer to your notes before you speak. Every time.
If you are honest, there will be no better gift you'll be giving to yourself. You will know exactly when to put your Percy Jackson and The Titan's Curse down to pick up your physics text book. After all, the grades and the glory will all be yours. I will only be able to brag about all A1s in your report card.
If you are honest to yourself, you will know which boys and girls you need to hang out with. Whether their being impressed with your Nike Air Max shoes is worth the the effort of having fair weather friends.
Remember, being honest will ensure that you have fewer friends and that you may not be the most popular boy in class, but your friends will always be good people.
If only honesty is so deeply ingrained in you, will you be able to tell right from wrong.
And today, where you stand, at this precipice ,it is of utmost importance.

I am your mother. I can tell when you are telling me the truth. Don't give me reason to be able to detect a lie. You know, I will forgive you murder. What I will never forgive, is your breaching my faith in your ability to tell the truth.
We are simple people.
You , me and your father.
That is what binds us together. We have not a conniving bone in our bodies. We work hard at what we do. We are honest in our respective professions. We make sure that our output is impeccable. We are honest to ourselves and to our work. That allows no one to pick any shortcomings in what we have done. So ,thanks to our honesty to ourselves we can look people in the eye and stand tall. neither of us has to bend over backwards to hide any misdemeanours. I want you to stand tall and strong. And I want people to think before they ask you to do anything dishonest.
Because they know you wont.
You were taught well!
Because someone taught me well too.

At the end of the day , remember ,it is all about  your peace of mind and courage of conviction.

So go ahead an do all that you are supposed to, and maybe a little of what you are not...but tell the truth. Always.
Especially to yourself.

Father's Day and a Rerun, #selfie and #MyRoleModel

Its the second Sunday of June. Sunny indeed.
Father's day today.
This is a rerun...
I've already blogged for #MyRoleModel and blogadda.com but when papa walked in in this Soldier For Women T-Shirt, I just had to do another post.
This T-Shirt was courtesy last year's blogadda's initiative to recognize the Men who supported the women around them wholeheartedly. I blogged about the man who has held my hand and taught me most of all I know and was finally able to express my love and appreciation for him.
As time goes by and the first grey hairs start appearing, one realizes that no matter what, one is never too old to move away from the shadow of the parents.
As I grow older and hopefully wiser, I know that I need my parents more and more.
I can acknowledge and respect the magnanimity of my father even more.
I now have the foresight to see that he has always meant well.
I also know that he has the grace to not gloat over my mistakes, but stand as a solid support system.

He is the man who has given unconditional love and support to me And Sweet Sister and our mother.
Always.
He is the man.
And now its the grand children who look up to him too...
Emulating a man who is #MyRoleModel.
Not overlooking the fact that hubby dear has supported me in all of my madness and sanity, but Papa has been there longer.
A big thank you to Blogadda.com ,maybe ,without this initiative, I would have never been able to express my love for my dad in words.
Thank you Papa for being there for us always. You are and always will be #MyRoleModel.
I wish Sweet Sister were part of that selfie too, alas she is in Bangalore...

Happy Father's Day Papa.
Love you....
Shalini and Jiya
